For his entire life, Prince Danti has been groomed to lead a jihad against the nations of Aarde as the Rajajaga, the King and Judge of the World. Yet despite the torment his father, the Sultan Akhaeon, inflicts upon him, Danti wants no part of war.
Instead, Danti attempts to free his whipping-boy slave, Rabhas, and overthrow his father's regime, but when Danti refuses to become the scourge of the heathen, he learns that there are far more terrible powers than his father in the city of Meknes and far worse ones coming.
There will be no rest until he decides his own fate holy war or martyrdom, the path to power or the path to wisdom.

The fantasy epic genre for the most part has been dominated by the cloning of concepts and characters in the Tolkien vein of imagination. While it's understandable as to why many writers continue to gravitate toward this more narrow interpretation of fantasy, it also seems to put writers (and readers) in a rut, as often these epics play the safe route of using what's tried and true, rather than branching out into new and unexplored territories.Enter The Rat King.
In this book, B. W. Hankinson has stepped away from the familiar paths of orcs, elves, and hobbits, and in their place has provided the reader with a breath of fresh air in the incorporation of heroes, villains, monsters, and places unfamiliar to many. Following the paths of two brothers, Danti and Rabhas, and their struggle against the nefarious monster bearing the book's title, Hankinson takes us on a wild and engaging ride, skillfully integrating character development with a plot that carries the complexity and nuance of Martin's Game of Thrones series (an apt comparison, considering the weaving of political intrigue and the interpersonal relationships that fill the book). Creatures from lore far beyond the typical sword and sorcery tales abound, from the Rephaim giants to the hungry and vicious Sobaki, providing readers with a fresh breath of imagination and creativity, one that could stand to be used in the modern fantasy genre.
The only real drawback to the Rat King-though a minor one-is Hankinson's occasional tendency to be a bit verbose and nonlinear at unexpected times. Some of the passages making reference to the past transitioned from past to present without clear demarcation as to which was was starting or ending. At times this was a bit confusing, and required some passages to be read more than once in order to keep the train of thought consistent.
But as said earlier, that drawback was a minor one, and quite forgivable in light of the book's many strengths.
If you are looking for a fresh fantasy epic that's not afraid to branch out in a new direction, then this book is for you. The Rat King is sure to bring enjoyment and satisfaction to those hungering for a new tale to be told.
